BAMBOO FLOORING
Bamboo can grow 3 feet (ca. 1 meter) or more within 24 hours, making it an easily renewable material and more eco-friendly than hardwoods that can take decades and centuries to grow. Bamboo flooring is just as strong, durable and in some cases even better in moisture resistance than hardwood floors.
THERMAL WALL
This solid concrete wall is exposed to the Southern and Western sun which is the most heat intensive. It collects the sun’s heat during the day and blocks the heat out of the buidling. During the night, when temperatures drop, the thermal wall releases the stored warmth into the dwelling, naturally heating the space.
MINIMAL EAST-WEST GLAZING
The rising East sun and the setting West sun are low in altitude and therefore strike the building at low, very difficult to block out sun angles. The Southern, mid-day sun is at higher angels which can easily be blocked with roof overhangs. To prevent direct sun from entering and heating the building, the East and West facades have no glazing.
NATURAL DAYLIGHT
In the Northern hemisphere, the sun rises in the East, moves along the Southern sky and sets in the West. The Northern facade of a building is therefore excluded from direct sunlight, yet allows daylight to enter the building without solar heat gain. To maximize the natural daylight in the building, the Northern facade is primarily glazing.
NATURAL SHADING
The corner cutting floor plan blocks out direct sunlight. The protruding concrete walls shade the windows, preventing solar heat gain yet allowing daylight to enter the space. This decreases the cooling load and need for artificial lighting, reducing cost and energy. The concrete elements also act as thermal walls.
